Randez vous with Rama
Our tour around Yosemite national park was going from good to unforgettable. As we stood at Glacier Point, a spectacular view unfolded before our eyes: Nevada and Vernal falls, granite Liberty Cap, Tenaya Canyon and the beautiful valley.
Forests around us were swarming with life scattered within a perfectly mounted ecosystem, as if some ancient intelligence put all the pieces together. Although I once heard that nature is not a place to visit, the thought of home came to my mind. This feeling, that something immemorial existed long before me, – something intelligent but impenetrable, overwhelmed me.
We find similar kinds of encounters with traces of some ancient, mysterious presence in Arthur Clarke’s novel “Rendezvous with Rama“. Fractal images belonging to this discourse mirror scenes of the robust cylindrical alien starship called Rama featured in this novel.
At first thought of as an asteroid, Rama turns out to be a giant spaceship with a whole artificial world inside of it. But inhabitants or creators of the ship are nowhere to be found. The exploration of Rama begins, but the farther scientists go, the more perplexed they become. There are cliffs, geometrical structures and a sea, but besides this interesting landscape, the ancients left only their robots, holograms and traces of their presence, and therefore the anxiously awaited rendezvous turns out to be quite a disappointment in the end.
After the ship had approached the Sun, it suddenly flew out of the Solar system, and out of human reach, using the Sun’s gravitation field as a “space drive“. In the images “Road trip“ and “Sol“ there is also the influence of Vincent Van Gogh‘s palette from pictures like “The Sower“ and “Church in Auvers“.
