Fractal song from my childhood
Songs of ice and fire could be heart at my childhood home, for as far back as I can remember. Vivid memories of fights, laughter, pleasant surprises and the closeness between my temperamentally opposite parents, still generate a sense of warmth and homely feelings within my heart, feelings that dominated the atmosphere at our house.
My mother was a fierce, sincere, just and highly paid business executive on one hand, with a strong work ethic, but she also had an explosive temperament and zero tolerance for any kind of excuses or clumsiness. My father, on the other side was a gentle soul, a painter who favored silence and contemplation, rather disorganized but very imaginative, thoughtful and loving.
The songs they sung were sometimes satirical poems, sometimes elegies and laments, yet most of the time, epic poetry interrupted by dramatic monologues. The brutal energy of fire collided with the overpowering potency of ice, and although fire would sometimes prevail, they were usually surprisingly cooperative.
It is a strange coincidence, yet somehow the story about my parents reminds me of Daenerys Targaryen and John Snow, two main characters from R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy series “Song of Ice and Fire“.
It is the personality transformations in these novels that capture the reader’s attention the most, more than any other development or fantasy element included in the plot that evolves over fictional continents, Westeros and Essos. Daenerys, the daughter of deceased Aerys II, the last Targaryen king, grows from a fearful and timid girl into a brave and vigorous woman. Of course, this process she went through quite a few painful episodes. She represents the realm of purifying fire and gold.
Daenerys has a special bond with dragons, which develops from the very moment they hatch, allowing her to endure flames unharmed. For this reasons she is also called the Queen of dragons. My fractal images “Golden links“, “Dragon Dance“, “Dragons Eye“, “Egg 1“, “Egg 2“, “Egg 3“, “Trio“, “Magic Lantern Egg“, “Pandora’s Box“ and “Echo of Fire“, all represent Daenerys and her three dragons, where the first few are only seemingly harmless eggs and the later ones, grown up beasts.
The pictures “Something“ and “Energize“ stand for the Iron Throne, Daenerys so passionately desires. Unique egg ornaments in these fractal pictures were inspired by oriental textile decorations.
John Snow, the other main character of the R.R. Martin’s novels, is the epitome of honor as well as selflessness, although he is at the same time tormented by his supposedly shameful ancestry. He lives and fights with dignity and shows mercy even when his deeds endanger his very own life. Snow is also an excellent swordsman.
The Winterfell Castle is where his home is and blue winter roses, which are presented in fractal images “Blue ribbons“, “Glass rose“, “Silk flower“ and “The Cutter“, grow in its glass garden. “Unknown danger“ and “Too late“ illustrate his untimely death, the latter of the two representing his dead body lying on the ground while his red blood spreads over pale blue snow. Pablo Picasso’s “Vase with flowers“ in grey and pale blue tones served as basis for the palette. The meaning of the Ice is twofold.
John Snow stands as a positive side of winter, on one hand, but on the other, there is this world of evil and eternal ice, world of death ruled by White Walkers, shown in images “Iced“, “Blues, “Palace of Psychedelic Warlords“, “The Eye of the Seer“, “Chaoscope 2002“ and “Chaoscope 2003“. For the last two, the chaoscope, 3D strange attractors rendering software was used.
